BIKEWAY Grants announced
GIBBSBORO RECEIVES $200K FOR PHASE II
BIKEWAY Construction/ VoORHEES NETS $70K FOR BIKEWAY
Last
week the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced recipients of grants
for 2002 bikeway projects. Gibbsboro
and Voorhees were the only Camden County municipalities to net gold. The complete NJ DOT press release is
included.
The
Gibbsboro grant is the eleventh largest in the state and will fund phase II of
the town’s bikeway. Phase I is under
construction and will link Lindenwold Park to the Paint Works Corporate Center
along the abandoned Lucaston Railway corridor.
The new funding will be used to construct a second bikeway perpendicular
to the first phase that will connect Pole Hill Park (at Gibbsboro’s eastern
border with Voorhees) to the western border of the town with Voorhees near
Laurel Oak Road.
Gibbsboro,
Voorhees, Lindenwold, Cherry Hill, and Berlin Borough are cooperating to design
an extensive bikeway that will span all five towns. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) is a
sponsor of the planning phase. Talks
are underway to potentially connect this bikeway to one running along Atlantic
Avenue through several other Camden County towns.
Gibbsboro
has been a progressive community in acquiring municipal open space and
developing recreation opportunities.
The municipal government presently owns more than 20% of the town’s land
area, has built and operates a senior recreation center, including a bowling
alley, and is now embarked on developing a top-notch bikeway system.
